Ali Asgar's professional journey began in the late 1980s, when television was becoming an important platform for Indian actors. His early work allowed him to gain experience in different types of roles and understand the demands of the television industry. This foundation became valuable as he gradually moved between television serials, films and comedy programs.

During the early stage of his career, Ali also appeared in Hindi films.
