Malhotra was selected for Nitesh Tiwari's biographical sports film Dangal along with Fatima Sana Shaikh, who was also relatively new.[4] Before the film, she said that she did not know much about wrestling. She then watched several videos on wrestling and "how wrestlers move, walk, their body language" and also did the training.
Sanya made her Bollywood debut with Dangal (2016), where she played Babita Kumari, one of the wrestler sisters trained by Mahavir Singh Phogat. The film became a major commercial and critical success, giving Sanya immediate recognition. She followed it with films such as Pataakha and Badhaai Ho, demonstrating that she could move beyond her debut and take on very different characters.
Her career expanded further with films including Photograph, Shakuntala Devi, Ludo and Pagglait. Her performance in Pagglait was particularly appreciated for its understated portrayal of a young widow navigating family expectations and personal identity. She later appeared in major commercial projects including Jawan, where her performance reached a much wider audience and further strengthened her position in mainstream Hindi cinema.
Sanya has continued to explore diverse characters rather than limiting herself to a particular genre. Her work in Mrs., in which she portrays a woman dealing with domestic expectations and changing ideas of identity, further highlighted her ability to carry emotionally demanding roles. Through a combination of dance training, expressive screen presence and carefully chosen projects, Sanya Malhotra has established herself as one of the notable contemporary actresses in Hindi cinema.
