David Thewlis Biography

David Thewlis was born David Wheeler in Blackpool in 1963. During his teenage years, he developed an interest in music and played in rock and punk bands. He eventually moved away from music as his primary career direction and enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, graduating in 1984.

After completing his drama training, Thewlis began building his acting career through television and smaller film roles. His early screen work included appearances in British productions such as Up the Elephant and Round the Castle, Only Fools and Horses, The Singing Detective, and Little Dorrit. His film debut came with Little Dorrit in 1987.

The defining breakthrough of Thewlis' early career came with Mike Leigh's Naked in 1993.
