Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai (2026) Movie Review and Story Overview
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai (2026) is a Hindi-language romantic comedy directed by David Dhawan and produced by Ramesh Taurani under Tips Films. The film stars Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles, with Maniesh Paul, Jimmy Shergill, Mouni Roy, Chunky Panday and others in supporting roles. It was released theatrically on 5 June 2026 and has a runtime of approximately 136 minutes.
The story follows Jass, played by Varun Dhawan, and Bani, played by Mrunal Thakur, whose marriage faces difficulties because they have different expectations about starting a family. Jass wants to have a child, while Bani is focused on her career and does not want children at that stage. Their disagreement eventually leads to their separation after five years of marriage.
After the separation, Jass moves to London, where he meets Preet, portrayed by Pooja Hegde. The two develop a relationship, but Jass's past unexpectedly returns when Bani and Preet both become pregnant. The situation creates a series of misunderstandings and complications, turning Jass's romantic life into a comedy of relationships, responsibility and conflicting emotions.
The film marks the fourth collaboration between David Dhawan and his son Varun Dhawan, following Main Tera Hero, Judwaa 2 and Coolie No. 1. Yunus Sajawal wrote the story and screenplay, while Farhad Samji contributed the dialogues. Ayananka Bose handled cinematography and Ritesh Soni served as editor.
The music features contributions from White Noise Collectives, Tanishk Bagchi, Javed–Mohsin, Rony Ajnali, Gill Machhrai and Akshay–IP, with Raju Singh composing the background score. The film also features the title song, which recreates elements of the popular 1999 Biwi No. 1 track of the same name.
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai was released in cinemas on 5 June 2026 and later began streaming on ZEE5 from 31 July 2026. With its combination of romance, family situations, relationship misunderstandings and comedy, the film centres on Jass's complicated journey as he attempts to deal with two relationships and the responsibilities that come with them.
The idea for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic when David Dhawan started working on the script for his next comedy entertainer. To appeal to modern audiences, he collaborated with a team of young writers while maintaining his trademark comic storytelling. The schedule also featured adventurous river-rafting scenes.
In December 2023, reports emerged that Varun Dhawan would reunite with his father David Dhawan for their fourth film together after the successful collaborations of Main Tera Hero, Judwaa 2, and Coolie No. 1. The project was officially announced in July 2024 by Tips Films. Before filming in Rishikesh, lead actors Varun Dhawan and Pooja Hegde participated in the sacred Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan.
The screenplay was written by Yunus Sajawal, while the dialogues were penned by Farhad Samji. The film's music was created by Tanishk Bagchi, Javed-Mohsin, Rony Ajnali, Gill Machhrai, Akshay-IP, and White Noise Collectives. Cinematography was handled by Ayananka Bose, while editing duties were managed by Ritesh Soni.
While promoting the movie in 2026, David Dhawan hinted that Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai could be his final film as a director. He cited health reasons and a desire to spend more time with family as key factors behind the decision. If this indeed becomes his last directorial project, the film will serve as a fitting farewell from one of Bollywood's most successful comedy filmmakers.
Final VerdictHai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai delivers a classic Bollywood blend of romance, comedy, music, and family entertainment. With Varun Dhawan's energetic performance, the fresh pairing with Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, and David Dhawan's trademark humor, the movie offers a fun cinematic experience for fans of commercial Hindi cinema.
