The story begins in 1951, when gold is discovered in the region that becomes Kolar Gold Fields. On the same day, Raja Krishnappa Bairya is born to a poor mother. Rocky grows up in poverty, and his mother teaches him that he must become wealthy and powerful. After moving to Bombay as a child, Rocky enters the criminal world and eventually becomes a powerful figure in the city's gold-smuggling network.
Years later, Rocky's growing reputation attracts the attention of Andrews, who offers him control over the Bombay underworld if he kills Garuda, the heir to K.G.F. Rocky travels to Bangalore and attempts to find a way to reach Garuda, but he soon realizes that killing him will not be easy. Rocky discovers that the gold being smuggled through Bombay is connected to K.G.F., and he decides that the only way to reach Garuda is to enter the gold fields himself.
Rocky deliberately enters K.G.F. as one of the workers and witnesses the terrible conditions imposed on the thousands of people forced to work there. Initially focused on his own mission, Rocky gradually becomes affected by the suffering around him. When he confronts the guards and protects a helpless slave, he becomes a symbol of hope among the workers. He secretly studies the mine and its security system while preparing for his final confrontation with Garuda.
The climax brings Rocky face-to-face with Garuda during a ritual at the K.G.F. fortress. Rocky hides among the prisoners and eventually attacks Garuda, killing him in front of the workers. The slaves then recognize Rocky as their new leader. However, the victory is only the beginning, as powerful figures outside K.G.F. learn of Garuda's death, while Adheera, previously believed to be dead, is revealed to be alive. The film ends by setting up the larger conflict that continues in K.G.F: Chapter 2.
K.G.F: Chapter 1 created a strong impact through its combination of action, scale, visual presentation and a larger-than-life central character.
